NEW! Black Elderberry Extract
2oz Sambucus nigra
Elderberry is derived from the dark purple berry or from the white to light-yellow flowers of the black or common elder tree (Sambucus nigra), a shrub or small tree native to Europe. It is used for nutritional support during the cold season. Israeli scientists tested a standardized extract of the berry on 40 people and found that it caused a significant improvement in symptoms of the flu or a complete cure in approximately 90 percent of cases within two to three days, compared to six days for a control group. Compounds in the berry bind to the flu virus and prevent it from penetrating cell walls. The berries are contain high levels of Vitamin C.* In fact, elderberries contain more vitamin C than any other herb except for black currants and rosehips!
Pure Liquid Elderberry is a super concentrated extract. It is a delicious extract flavored with natural blackberry extract. It is one of the only sugar free Elderberry liquid extracts on the market. Elderberry Extract is recommended during the cold season for extra nutritional support. Elderberry provides phytochemicals unique to Elderberry which may help you keep healthy. Elderberry extract also contains natural vitamins A, B, and C as well as bioflavonoids.
Studies have shown that elderberry inhibits the ability of viruses to penetrate our cells. It has been used for centuries to treat colds, flu and sore throats. Elder also seems to have an affinity for the respiratory system and has also been used to treat bronchitis and asthma. The deep purple berries are a rich source of flavonoids, amino acids and vitamins A, B and C. The taste of the berries is quite pleasant, making this a very easy remedy to take.
What can you do once you or a family member gets the flu? Now, a new study reconfirms elderberry’s ability to reduce flu days. In a new study Extract of Elderberry reduced symptoms and shortened the duration of flu type A and B in fifty four participants aged 18-54. The study, accepted for publication in the Journal of International Medical Research, was conducted in Oslo, Norway.
On average, flu patients given elderberry recovered in 3.1 days, compared to 7.1 days for those given a placebo. In a previous published study, 90% of flu patients taking Elderberry were completely free of symptoms in 2 to 3 days, as compared to 6 days with a placebo.
The action is explained as follows – flu viruses are covered by tiny protein spikes which they use to attach to and infect healthy human cells. Apparently the key active substances within black elderberry disarm these spikes and stop the first step of viral infection.
Active constituents
Flavonoids, including quercetin, are believed to account for the therapeutic actions of the elderberry flowers and berries. These flavonoids include anthocyanins that are powerful antioxidants and protect cells against damage according to test tube studies. According to laboratory research, an extract from the leaves inhibits the influenza virus and herpes simplex virus. The effect on influenza of a syrup made from the berries of the black elderberry has been studied in a small double-blind trial. People receiving an elderberry extract (2 tablespoons [30 ml] per day for children, 4 tablespoons [60 ml] per day for adults) appeared to recover faster than did those receiving a placebo. Animal studies have shown the flowers to have anti-inflammatory properties. These actions have not been verified in human clinical trials.. At the time of writing, there were no well-known drug interactions with elderberry.
