Neptune NKO™ Krill Oil
Neptune NKO™ Krill Oil is made from tiny shrimp-like crustacean (Euphausia superba) harvested from the pristine oceans surrounding Antarctica . Krill are part of the Antarctic food chain. Krill feed on plankton, and large baleen (toothless) whales feed on krill. Along with plankton, krill constitute the largest biomass on earth, making them one of the most easily renewable resources in the animal kingdom.
NKO™ Krill Oil is Really Three
Nutraceuticals in One
NKO™ Contains:
1) Anti-Oxidants
2) Omega-Fatty Acids
3) Phospholipids
- The anti-oxidant capacity of NKO™ Krill Oil is nothing short of amazing. It is rich in astaxanthin, a natural carotenoid which is more powerful than beta-carotene. Using ORAC testing (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity), NKO™ Krill Oil has over 300 times the anti-oxidant power of vitamin C or vitamin E, over 34 times the power of CoQ10, and more than 47 times the power of lutein.1
- The omega-3 fatty acids in NKO™ Krill Oil are unique in their profile. NKO™ is made via a patented low temperature extraction process which maintains the integrity of the phospholipids, to which the omega-3’s are bound. Phospholipids are the primary structures of human cell membranes, which, by regulating cellular transport, function as the “gate-keepers” of cells. When omega-3’s are preserved intact in this phospholipid complex, it highly facilitates the absorption of the fatty acids in the intestines.2
- The most predominant phospholipid in NKO™ Krill Oil is phosphatidyl-choline, making NKO™ Krill Oil a rich source of choline. Human cells have an absolute need for choline; when deprived of choline, they die. Choline is a precursor for the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, and for trimethylglycine, a methyl donor and known hepato-protectant (liver protector).3
NKO™ Krill Oil is the first nutraceutical known to contain this omega-3 / triglycerides complex. This complex provides important cell membrane building blocks in the ratios used by the body, and may be better utilized than stand-alone omega-3 or phospholipid supplements. The result: healthier cell membranes that function better to maintain human health.*
Standard fish oils lack a phospholipid complex, instead they contain omega-3 fatty acids in the form of free triglycerides. Two studies have shown significantly higher DHA absorption when DHA was bound to triglycerides, like fish oil.4,5 Standard fish oils also do not offer the anti-oxidant activity that NKO™ Krill Oil does. In fact, due to their weak anti-oxidant capacity, omega-3 fish oil supplements must have anti-oxidants added to them to keep them from becoming rancid. Due to its high anti-oxidant power, NKO™ Krill Oil is highly stable, and does not need added protection.

NKO™ Krill Oil Displays Clinically Proven to
Reduce C-Reactive Protein
What is C-Reactive Protein?
C-reactive protein (CRP) is produced by the liver, and is present in times of inflammatory response.6 CRP is synthesized by hepatocytes in response to IL-1 and IL-6, and can activate the complement pathway and influence phagocytic cell function.7 A count of less than 1 mg per deciliter of CRP is reportedly a healthy level,8 with some institutions considering a count exceeding 1mg9 or 3mg10 CRP per liter to be elevated.
It is well-known that high CRP is an important indicator of risk of coronary heart disease (CHD),11 specifically atherosclerosis, which in turn may give rise to ischemic heart disease (IHD), myocardial infarction (MI) and stroke.12 CRP levels have also been shown to be an independent predictor of survival after ischemic stroke has occurred.13
Significantly, recent research indicates CRP can identify patients with high CHD risk who may not have high LDL cholesterols levels.14 This is of great importance. In 2000, approximately 12 million adults in the US considered normo-lipidemic had high CRP concentrations.15
Recent research has shown that CRP is not simply a marker for inflammation, but has a direct pro-inflammatory effect.16 In addition to coronary heart disease, it may also be elevated in cases of rheumatoid and osteoarthritis, as well as other conditions.
NKO™ Krill Oil has been shown to significantly decrease elevated C-reactive protein levels in a controlled human study. The study involved 90 patients, 45 receiving 300mg NKO™ Krill Oil daily, 45 receiving a placebo. There was over a 30% mean decrease in C-reactive protein levels in the NKO™ Krill Oil group after 30 days.17
NKO™ Krill Oil – Multi-Factorial Cardiovascular Support*
There are several markers or predictors of the risk of cardiovascular disease. High levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, and low levels of “good” HDL cholesterol all have been long-standing indicators of risk of coronary heart disease. NKO™ Krill Oil was the subject of a controlled human study involving 120 patients with hyperlipidemia (elevated blood lipid levels). The study included groups receiving placebo, receiving 3g fish oil daily, and those receiving 1g, 1.5g, 2g, 3g NKO™ Krill Oil daily for 90 days.
After ninety days, all NKO™ Krill Oil groups showed significant decreases in total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and triglycerides, and simultaneous increases in HDL cholesterol. The patients in the 1g and 1.5g NKO™ Krill Oil groups were kept on a maintenance dose of 500mg daily for another ninety days, and each group maintained significant corrections in all four markers as compared with baseline values.18
Percent Changes: LDL Cholesterol HDL Cholesterol
Placebo Group + 13.03% + 4.00%
1 Gram NKO™ Krill - 32.03% + 43.92%
NKO™ Krill Oil – Alleviation of Emotional and Physical Symptoms of PMS*
One factor which has been found to aggravate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is an imbalance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids and their metabolites. There is currently a large gap in the average dietary intake of omega-6 to omega-3 in favor of omega-6, and some women with PMS exhibit abnormal omega-6 fatty acid metabolism. In such cases, pro-inflammatory omega-6 metabolites are high, and anti-inflammatory metabolites are deficient, which can contribute to dominance of pro-inflammatory type 2 prostaglandins.
In a controlled published study, 70 patients with PMS were asked to take either 2g NKO™ Krill Oil or 2g of 18:12 fish oil daily for 30 days, then to continue dosing eight days prior to and two days after menstruation, for a total study time of three months.
After both 45 and 90 days, there was a greater statistically significant improvement over a broader range of PMS symptoms in the NKO™ Krill Oil Group over the group taking fish oil. Symptoms improved by NKO™ Krill Oil included breast tenderness, stress, irritability, depression, joint pain, abdominal pain, weight gain and bloating. 19
NKO™ Krill Oil Sets A High Standard For Purity
Every batch of NKO™ Krill Oil has an anisidine value of less than 1.2, and a peroxide value of less than 0.2 meq/kg. These are two important measures of freshness, so users of NKO™ krill oil can be confident that they are using a nutraceutical which is free of rancidity. Each batch is guaranteed to have less than one-tenth of one PPM (part per million) of cadmium, mercury and lead, and less than 0.2 PPB (parts per billion) of PCB’s. NKO™ krill oil is tested for these and other contaminants, and conforms to set standards for purity.
